The weekly John Lawrence Seminars in Biosciences (2016- 2017) take place on Tuesdays, from 4 to 5 p.m. in several Berkeley Lab locations, depending on the seminar topic; exceptions to day and time may occur. The series is currently not open to the public but offered to Biosciences researchers, their Lab colleagues, and guests. Our speakers represent a broad range of biosciences research areas and are nominated and hosted by researchers of our three divisions in the Biosciences Area. Speakers and details are subject to change. This page is updated regularly, but you may also contact seminar coordinator Ciccina Guagliardo  for further details and confirmation. Below is an archive of our series through Spring 2016 when still hosted by the former Life Sciences Division. Upcoming seminars will be posted here soon.

Dr. John H. Lawrence

The John Lawrence lectures are supported by an endownment created by generous gifts from patients and from family of John H. Lawrence, M.D., D.Sc., F.A.C.P, the Father of Nuclear Medicine.  In 1936, Lawrence (pictured in 1955) came to California from Harvard and Yale to join his Nobel Laureate brother, Ernest O. Lawrence,  so that he could explore the medical uses of radioactive isotopes and subatomic particles from the newly invented cyclotron. Here, he joined the faculty of the University of California and headed the medical research laboratory that eventually became Donner Laboratory, the world’s first research laboratory devoted to nuclear medicine, diagnosis and treatment. Learn more about John H. Lawrence.
